Emergency Management

Emergency Management offers expertise, coordination, and support to the Mount Sinai Health System before, during, and after any natural, human-made, or technological disaster. These contributions fall under the four phases of the emergency management cycle:

Preparedness: Planning and training activities that take place during normal operations before an emergency occurs
Response: Actions taken during an emergency under emergency operations plan activation
Recovery: Actions taken during and consequential to the emergency to restore normal operations
Mitigation: Efforts taken during normal operations to prevent or lessen the impact of a future emergency

Additionally, Emergency Management guides the Health System efforts on resilience, recovery, and contingency relating to:

Business Continuity: Level of readiness to maintain critical functions after an emergency or disruption

Mission

Emergency Management’s mission is to design, build, and maintain a resilient health care system prepared to respond to any disaster.

The key is for all employees to be fully prepared before an emergency, if one arises. To this end, we continuously reinforce our guidance on the three steps to personal preparedness (make a plan, build an emergency kit, be informed) and the “personal preparedness leads to system preparedness” message with all staff. Personnel who have a plan in place for themselves and their families (including young children, older adults, family members with special needs, and pets) will be able to contribute towards the Health System getting through any crisis scenarios.

When an emergency does occur, we use the national standard Hospital Incident Management System to provide structure to the Health System response. Emergency Management supports the System Emergency Operations Center and Hospital Incident Management teams by gathering intelligence and coordinating efforts to help leadership manage these adverse events.
