Treatments We Offer

We are ready for you. As soon as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrives to transport you to Mount Sinai Queens and identifies that you are experiencing stroke symptoms, they act to help you and notify our Emergency Department so we can begin comprehensive treatment as soon as you get to our hospital.

The stroke team immediately administers appropriate treatment to minimize the stroke and its effects. Your treatment may include:

• Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)—dissolves the clot and improves blood flow to the brain
• Intra-arterial intervention (thrombectomy)—surgically removes the occlusion—a blood clot—from an artery. Mount Sinai Queens is the only hospital in Queens that performs thrombectomy procedures.

In order to provide the appropriate ongoing treatment you require, we fully assess your condition using advanced imaging studies, laboratory testing, and consider all other factors related to your health.

You will receive outstanding care in designated stroke beds by Mount Sinai Queens Stroke Center doctors, including vascular surgeons, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, emergency medicine doctors and our highly skilled clinical Magnet-status^® nursing staff.

In addition, as part of the extensive Mount Sinai Health System, our stroke team of experienced doctors and nurses have 24/7 access to emergency consultation with our Manhattan campus stroke physicians. Especially complex cases may be transferred to our Manhattan campus for further care as needed.

Rehabilitation

Following acute treatment for your stroke and your condition is stable, the Mount Sinai Queens stroke rehabilitation team steps in for the next phase of your care. This team includes rehabilitation medicine physicians, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists who focus on helping you regain function for your quality of life. Our nurses, social workers, and case managers are expert at minimizing complications and preventing future strokes. We work with you and your family to create an appropriate discharge plan for your ongoing care that may include rehabilitation and home health care.

Stroke Awareness and Prevention

Our Stroke Center staff regularly reaches out to educate the community about risk factors and symptoms of stroke. We conduct blood pressure screenings and provide information about proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices including regular exercise and smoking cessation.
